Targets for Today:

  • I can read quietly for an extended time -- hopefully enjoying it!
  • I can improve my fluency by better understanding my own reading habits, and by practicing!
  • I can show what I know about using strategies before, during, and after reading.

Today’s  Agenda for Tuesday, May 22, 2018:

1.  Prepare for the final test on using BICUM Strategies and using mnemonics to memorize.

2.  Hand in your BICUM Brochure.  Hand it in flattened out to the top wire basket.

3. Take the test.
When you finish, hand in your test to the top wire basket.
Note the time and do quiet, individual reading.

Your purpose is to prepare to write an informative essay about how the Supreme Court works.  This is one of the sources you have been given.

Sample answers from the practice:
from During Reading --

"I was visualizing crowded streets."

"I am making text-to-text connections to other articles I have read about how government works.

from  During Reading, Fix-Up Strategies --

"I could use the "Focus and Read It Again" strategy.   For example, when the article says "anyone Tweed hired to do work for the government was instructed to cushion the bill with a certain amount of money."  The first time I read this I didn't understand it, but the second time I could."

"If I can't figure it out on my own, I could ask Mrs. Trejo, my Utah history teacher."

"I read ahead, and found out that the author hadn't finished explaining about how corporations are influencing the government.  After I did that, I got it."

After Reading
"I could study in a group and we could talk about why corporations have so much power."

If You Were Absent on Tuesday, May 22, 2018:
Do your make-up reading, using the pink make-up sheet, or printing your own from Skyward.

  • I can show what I know about using strategies before, during, and after reading.

Today’s  Agenda:

1. Pick up your folder.
Sit in your own seat, even if it is turned.

. . . if you are practicing correctly.
2. Take the practice test for using the BICUM Strategies and using mnemonics.

Apply your BICUM Strategies (using your brochure) to the assigned article.
For the final test you will not have your brochure with you.

The test looks like your own brochure.
Start with the cover of the brochure, then do the BEFORE READING, then the DURING READING, then the AFTER READING.

When you do the SELF Test, your answers should be about how the study area you have now (how is it?), how you are feeling emotionally and physically now, and about how difficult the assigned article will be for you.

Tell specifically how you are using the strategies to read this article.
Mention something from the article in each answer.

Your purpose is to be able to take a test in your social studies class about how corporations influence government.  (We will not really take that test!)

3. When you finish, do individual reading.
Don't forget to fill out your log. Today is May 18.

4. (If time)  Partner Fluency Practice    --
Don't forget to fill out your fluency graph.
