Finish reading the article about the Nacirema.
There is a puzzle to be solved with this article.  What is it really about?

Page 3: Turn to your partner and take turns reading the third page out loud.  Remember to pace yourself with your finger!  As you read, do three of the following strategies:
  • If you don't understand something, focus on it and read it again.
  • Find another word like "Nacerima."
  • Circle  another example of body rituals.
  • Make another connection.
  • Write a "?" somewhere you are confused.

Page 4: The Conclusion! Read it to yourself.
When you have finished reading, use the space below the article to answer the following question.

What is the central idea of this article?

Last Step—recreate the article.
1.     Recreate the article by writing a haiku about the central idea. Remember : a haiku has 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the second line, and 5 syllables on the third line.

2.     This article takes something familiar to us and makes it sound strange and foreign. To recreate this idea, write a paragraph (8 sentences) from the point of view of an alien who sees your favorite food and finds it absolutely disgusting.

If You Were Absent:
Complete the reading make-up and follow the steps with the article.
