Metacognition = Noticing your own thinking.  Thinking about your thinking.  IAMNOWHERE! meta -- back off and look at something to get a better view, a better understanding look at your own reading -- your reading experiences  how do you feel about reading set two to three goals for your reading   -- to improve  wikipedia --  Meta (from the Greek meta- μετά- meaning "after" or "beyond") is a prefix used in English to indicate a concept which is an abstraction behind another concept, used to complete or add to the latter. meta go meta  = considers the effects of one's actions, instead of simply acting them out planning to use  the most effective tools possible   What does meta mean in ClashRoyale (video game) best strategy and cards to use based on stats and synergy. Help and Enrichment

Build Your Background Knowledge

You might not be able to understand what you're reading because you just don't have enough background knowledge (also known as SCHEMA).

Here are some helpful ways to increase your background knowledge.  You could use any or all of these in any order.  

1. Look it up on a reliable online site. 
One way to find reliable information is to use Utah's Online Library (UOL).   https://onlinelibrary.uen.org/   You can use it at school without a username and password.  You need those when you use it at home, so look for them toward the bottom of the homepage on the left when you are using the Online Library at school.   Looking something up in an encyclopedia such as World Book (which is free on UOL)  is a quick way to learn about it.  

You can use Wikipedia as a jumping-off point, too, but be careful.  Remember that it can be changed by almost anyone.   


2. Find a book (maybe one written for children) on the topic.







3. Watch a documentary or other educational program.

Announcements and Reminders for Wednesday, January 3, 2019:                            Tomorrow's Cavetime will be based on 2nd Term grades.  Be prepared each class day for quiet individual reading time.  You could bring a book from home, from the public library, from the school library (media center), or you could use a book from our classroom library.    You will receive points reading quietly during reading time.  It's a great idea to use this time to do assigned reading from your English class.  Your Teachers for Reading 7 Ms. Hilton First Rotaion Jan. 3 - Feb. 13 Ms. Dorsey First Rotaion Jan. 3 - Feb. 13 Ms. Fugal Second Rotation Feb. 15 - April 10 Ms. Cannon Third Rotation April 12 - May 24 Targets for this Rotation You will learn a set of reading strategies that you can apply -- especially to the reading you do to learn.  You will be able to tell about and use strategies for  Before Reading, During Reading, and  After Reading.  You will apply these strategies to reading and learning from various texts,                                    including texts you read on the internet.  By the end of his rotation, you will be know and apply The CRAAP Test for Reliability and Usefulness,  A SELF check for preparing to study-read,  and other strategies. You will apply strategies that we learn to memorize assigned material.  (You will learn the topics of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution -- The Bill of Rights, and the names of the first ten Presidents of the United States.)  You will improve your reading fluency -- and graph your improvement. You will have spend hours reading for enjoyment -- and create a record of your in-class reading. The best way to improve your reading  is to read, read, read.

Targets to Work on Today: I know where to find important things and places in the classroom.  I know strategies to use before reading.  I can read a variety of materials and can read for an extended period of time. I can read fluently.

Read the first paragraph or so.    A Quick Way to Find a Just-Right Book  1. Choose a book that you think you might enjoy. 2. Read the second page. 3. Hold up a finger for each word you are not sure of or do not know.  4. If there are five or more words you did not know (and can't figure out from context), you should choose an easier book.  Figuring out a word from Context: Using Clues for Unknown Vocabulary 3. Book Pass -- to get acquainted with some of the books in our classroom.   The teacher will tell you which way to pass the books.  Look at the cover.  Read the blurb on the back of the book.  Fill out a line on your log with the title.    Book Pass Log.doc Begin reading at the beginning of the book, and keep reading until you're told to stop -- about three minutes.  Fill out the rest of that line on your book pass log.  Then do the same with the next book.  Repeat.  4. Not-So-Sustained Silent Reading      Book frenzy -- When directed to, politely negotiate with classmates to get back the book you would most like to read during the next _5-8 _ minutes. Receive your blue Reading Log and fill it out for this book.  5.  Individual Reading Time (and practice the strategy we just covered). Vocabulary: Context Clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence.

Help and Enrichment  Using Clues for Unknown Vocabulary
