Announcements and Reminders:      Today:  Fix-ups and Reliable Sources September 20:  After Reading Strategies:  Reduce and Retain    September 24:  Final Test and Readathon!  Bring treats, if you wish.       Make sure your BICUM Brochure is complete for the test.   This is your brain on books! September 25 is our Final Test and Readathon! If you want to bring treats, don't forget!

Targets for Today: I have fix-up strategies I can use when reading a challenging text. I can recognize why some online sites are not reliable.

Today’s  Agenda: Today's Focus:  Fix-ups and Reliable Sources  About Your Final Test: Review the CRAAP Test.  It will be on the final test. For your final test, you will use strategies from your BICUM Brochure as you read an article.  You will explain why you selected the strategies and how you used them with that particular article. 1. Quiet Individual Reading Time   Select a book to read and read quietly for about 10-15 minutes. Notice yourself making inferences.  Fill out your reading log.  Example   9-18-18  x "Grit" in Costco Magazine pp. 50-53.  Anyone can choose to develop grit which adds endurance to enthusiasm. 20  If you're absent, or were off-task during reading time, or didn't fill out your log, pick up a pink make-up sheet and do the homework. 2. (More BICUM -- Be in Control, Use Metacognition.)  and on to Fix-Up Strategies  Outside  --  After Reading #2 -Retain- Continued from  During Reading Fix-Up Strategies  1. Check your own inner voice. 2. Focus on it, and read it again. 3. Try reading it out loud. 4. Try reading ahead a bit. 5.  Look for any words that may be getting in your way. 6.  Ask someone who can help you. -- or mark it with a ? for later. 7. Add to your background knowledge!  You can do this before reading or during reading. Look it up on a reliable online site. Find a book for children on the topic. Watch a documentary or other educational program.  BICUM Be in Control: Use Metacognition [Your Name] [Your Class Period] 3.  Reliable Sources Exercise  You will go to https://www.allaboutexplorers.com/explorers/ Find the explorer you have been assigned.  Find at least five "facts"  that you suspect are not true.  Search in Utah's Online Library to check each "fact."  https://onlinelibrary.uen.org/  If doing this from home, you will need to use the username and password.  You can also find this assignment on Canvas.  Use World Book or Gale. Lab 224   Sit at the computer number that matches your folder number. Truth or NOT.docx Note:  Students in A4 who did not get at least 3 "facts" and the truth behind them, need to complete the assignment at home. If time --  (We did not have time for this.) Partner Fluency Practice.        Participate appropriately as both reader and listener.       Fill out your fluency graph for each time you read.  Example Date 9-18-18 9-18-18 Passage 618 618 Words Per Minute 143 (your own WPM) 153   (your own WPM)
