Announcements and Reminders:

Targets for Today: I can recognize the important places in Ms. Dorsey classroom. I know what to do when I come into class. I can find books and read quietly and independently.   I know the purpose of Partner Fluency and can begin tracking myself.

Today’s  Agenda: Welcome and Needed Supplies      Bring your own pens and pencils.  It also helps to have your own lined paper.  If you have a book you want to read or that you need to read for your English or another class, bring it to read during our individual reading time. Find your assigned seat.  Notice the portion of the whiteboard for Reading 7. Pick up (from the front)       a reading log Don't forget to fill out your reading log every time.  It counts on your grade!    Fill out every part of the line for each day: date, type of material read, title, something about what you read, minutes read. This log should stay in your folder!! # Date B N M O Title -- Use ditto marks (“)  when continuing the same material.  Material read/Explanation/Read from page__ to page __ Minutes Read Total Hours Read Ex 8/20/19 x The Fourth Stall  p. 46-55 15     If you're absent, or don't fill out your log, pick up a pink make-up sheet and do the homework. Getting acquainted with our classroom:  Where do you turn things in?  Where do we keep our folders?  Where do we find the materials for fluency practice? Where could I find a book or magazine to read?  Where can I find handouts in case I've been absent? What can I find on this blog? Just for fun!  Julian Smith -- "I'm Readin' a Book!" The disclosure document and signature form -- find it on Canvas.  Also complete the Strategies Pre-Assessment. 2.  Partner Fluency Practice        Get up and out of your seat!!  Each partner gets a page protector and a copy of the passage to read.        Put the passage into the page protector. Partner Fluency will help you feel comfortable reading out loud.  Your partner can also help you notice what kind of mistakes  you  make (long pauses, skipping words, saying the wrong word, etc.) so that you can work on those and get better!      One-Minute Partner Fluency Practice        Each partner gets a page protector and a copy of the poem to read.        Put the poem into the page protector.        With a classmate you will take turns reading the passage.        You will be timed for one minute.        Your partner will follow along and mark any errors and mark where you ended.         Notice how far you read.  Figure out how many words you read, then subtract any errors.           Write it down.                 ______ wpm MAKE SURE YOU FILL OUT THE DATE, PASSAGE NUMBER OR LETTERS, AND WORDS PER MINUTE EACH TIME YOU HAVE HAD A TURN TO DO A TIMED READING.       Fill out the next column on the graph for each time you read. Write in the date, the passage number, and your words per minute. If You Were Absent: Pick up a pink reading make-up log, or print the log from Skyward, to complete the make-up reading assignment. See above for the other activities we did in class.

Welcome to Reading 7 -- 2019-2020 -- Back-to-School Shopping Suggestions

While the sales on school supplies are available, it's a good idea to stock up on the things you'll need later, but that will be much more expensive then !   If you are able to, you might want to get enough paper, pencils, and pens to last for the school year. 


Note: If your family cannot afford school supplies, please speak with a teacher or administrator. 

⇒  Parents, please sign the AUP (computer/internet use) agreement as soon as possible.  Parents must sign into Skyward under their parent account to do this.  Look for a link to "Computer and Internet Use Permission Form." 


Here are some required and suggested items.
1. Required (You will definitely need these):  

• Plenty of lined paper (Get enough to last for the school year, since it
  
  
  costs so much more when it's not on sale.)
  

  

• Plenty of pencils (Teachers usually keep some on hand for students  to borrow in an emergency, but students should supply their own, and should not break or throw pencils.) If you like to use mechanical pencils, have extra lead on hand. Teachers likely won't have it. 
•  I'd really appreciate it if you could 
• donate some pencils to the class!

• Pens with black or dark blue (indigo)

• A red pen might be used sometimes, but do not do your homework and in-class writing with it or with other odd colors of ink.
• Sticky notes
• Highlighters -- bring two colors
• Parents, please don't send sharpies or other permanent ink pens to school with your students. They can quickly become a nuisance item. If they need to use them to mark binders, notebooks, P.E. clothes, etc., please do that at home.

Be prepared each class day to bring to class a book to read.  You could bring one from home, from the public library, from the school library (media center), or you could check out a book from our classroom library.   You will likely receive points for bringing your book and for being prepared to read quietly during reading time.  

2. These items are suggested, but are not required for this class: 

• You may need a composition book for English class.  Check with your teacher.
• 
  Colored Pencils  may be needed for history class, and come in handy at times in other classes.
• A couple of three ring binders. Some students do better with everything kept in one binder, and others prefer to have one binder for A-Day classes and another for B-Day classes. (A few students organize better with folders, but in my experience most students do better with a binder and dividers.) 
• Binder dividers -- You can buy these or make your own with index or construction paper.
• Spiral notebooks -- Watch for those that go on sale for seventeen or twenty-five cents each.
• A three-ring hole-punch that fits in your binder is very helpful if you receive handouts that haven't been punched.
• A small manual pencil sharpener is nice to have.
•  A small pack of Kleenex -- We usually have facial tissues/Kleenex available in our classrooms, but they are not soft on a tender nose.
• Hand sanitizer
•  If you find a good deal, you might want to have on hand some poster board. Sometimes teachers will assign students to create posters, and it's helpful not to have to run out to the store at 10 pm when the student remembers he or she has a poster due the next day. [Yes,  I've been there, done that with my own children!]
• Sticky notes and highlighters
