William Clark thinks he has sighted the ocean.  He soon will.

First time a black man and a woman vote in an official U.S. vote.
They build Fort Clatsop.

March 23, 1806


They begin the journey home.



Stayed again with the Nez Perce waiting for the winter snows to melt on the Lolo Trail.





July 3 - August 12, 1806


The Lewis and Clark expedition splits up to explore more of the territory.



It was Lewis' group which suffered the expeditions only deadly hostile encounter with American Indians at Two Medicine Fight Site. ( 2 members of the Blackfeet tribe known as the Piegans died -- no members of the expedition died.)



August 11, 1806


Lewis accidentally shot 
by a member of his own party





September 23, 1806


The expedition reaches St. Louis, ending their journey after two years, four months, and ten days


Lewis sends a letter to Jefferson from St. Louis.  
The letter takes 31 days to reach Jefferson.
Lewis goes on to Monticello to report personally to Jefferson.

Jefferson appoints Lewis  governor of the Louisiana Territory

Lewis Dies
in Tennessee

Clark dies
in St. Louis


The U.S. spent $40,000 on the expedition.

Because of their expedition, the U.S. was able to claim the Oregon Territory.
They blazed the way for mountain men, other explorers, pioneers, etc.
