Targets for
Today:
I know strategies I can use to comprehend (understand) what I read, and to remember it. I am computer/internet savvy! |
Today’s Agenda:
1. Pick up your folder, please.
2. Individual Reading. Fill out your reading log. Take home any make-up work in your folder (pink).
3. Partner Fluency Practice
4. Practice DURING READING strategies. We are practicing these strategies so you can use them on your own. |
DURING READING
Practice Pacing Yourself
Pace yourself with
a pencil your finger.
IV. Make Predictions
Words you need to know:
prediction: about what is to come
inference: about what is (reading between the lines, What is the author saying without directly stating it?)
This is the prediction cycle:
1) predict 2) read
3) check (to see whether you were right)
4) compliment (yourself on getting it right) or correct (your thinking using the new information).
Storytime -- You will receive a sheet of plain paper. Fold it in half. On each half you will draw something as you are directed to. Write your name somewhere on that paper.
Predicting Practice -- How could these words be related to each other in a story?

Skittering
Make the things you have to learn memorable:
- Find a connection with what you have experiences or what you know.
- Draw a picture.
- Find an emotional connection, if you can. You might want to make up a story to help you remember something, or imagine yourself there.
And then there is making inferences.
Words you need to know:
Imply = to suggest
Infer = to conclude
If You Were
Absent:
Complete the make-up reading. With the Year-Round Schools article, talk back to the text. Ask questions, make comments. Write them down and bring them to the teacher. Using a nonfiction text, practice pacing yourself with your finger as you read. Before reading mark a line about 1/2-1 inch in from the right and left margin. As you move your finger over the lines, stop at the line. Your peripheral vision will take in the words or parts of words outside the lines. Follow the directions above to make predictions and read the stories linked from this post.
Don't forget to finish and hand in your computer lab packet if you haven't.
