Targets for Today:   I can quietly read my own choice of materials for an extended time -- hopefully enjoying it!  I can improve my fluency by better understanding my own reading habits, and by practicing!   I can learn about improving my reading by using metacognition.

Today’s  Agenda for  Wednesday, January 24, 2018: 1. Individual quiet reading.     Fill out your reading log for today.       (San Diego Quick Individual Reading Tests)  2. Partner fluency practice  -- Pick up a new passage.       Record each time you read on your fluency graph.  3.  Metacognition:   Add a panel to your BICUM Brochure.  Notice that we're skipping one for now.  We'll get back to it. Your Brochure:  Outside -- left panel .   After Reading -- #2 RETAIN (Remember) Teach Someone Study in Groups Recreate in Writing (and drawing) Make Flash Cards Use mnemonics 1. Rhymes and Songs 2. Acronyms 3.  Acrostics 4. Mini-Stories 5. Picture Links Rehearse Continued from  DURING READING Fix-Up  Strategies  1. Check your  own inner  voice. 2. Focus on it,  and read it  again. 3. Try reading  it out loud. 4. Try reading  ahead a bit. 5.  Look for  any words (or  ideas or facts) that may be  getting in  your way. 6.  Ask  someone who  can help you. - - or mark it  with a ? for later. Vocabulary: mnemonic -- a memory aide -- something to help you remember acronym:  an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g., ASCII, NASA ). acrostic:  An acrostic is a poem or sentence (or other form of writing) in which the first letter (or syllable, or word) of each line (or paragraph, or other recurring feature in the text) spells out a word, message or the alphabet. peg system -- a mnemonic using numbers and words that rhyme with them.
